Swim Lessons at the YMCA

Make a splash with the organization that invented group swimming lessons. The Y offers group, private, and semi-private lessons for all ages and abilities using a proven, safety-focused curriculum. Coaches will assign participants to groups based on tryouts and the best balance of classes each season. Swim lessons are offered year-round in Salem and Silverton, and during the summer in Monmouth. Please call to arrange a free evaluation with one of our instructors.

  • The Withnell Family YMCA has a limited number of swim lesson spots which fill up quickly. We open new swim lessons each month. Swim Lessons post on the 15th of every month (spots open at 12:01 am).

Parent-tot Lessons at the Withnell Family YMCA:

Parent-tot age is 6 months to 3 years old. These classes are held on Saturday at 8:30am, 9am and 9:30am for 30 minutes.

Swim Lessons at the Withnell Family YMCA:

We offer classes for 3-5 year old swimmers (30 minutes), and 6-12 year old swimmers (40 minutes).

Level 1: Your swimmer will learn to put their face in the water.

Level 2: Your swimmer will learn and master independently floating on their front and back.

Level 3: Your swimmer will learn and master how to streamline on front and back independently.

Level 4: Your swimmer will learn how to freestyle and bilaterally breathe.

Level 5/6: Your swimmer is mastering freestyle, treading water, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.

Levels 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6 are grouped together.

Most classes have a 5 students to 1 instructor ratio.

All lessons are built on each other; it is important to remember that not all swimmers master the techniques and skills at the same pace. Some may need to repeat a level several times before advancing. The deck supervisor will communicate this mid-session. It is important to master the skills in sequence before your swimmer can move on safely to the next level.

Are you re-registering your swimmer? Assessments are done in class just before the 15th of the month. If you are on a waiting list and a spot becomes available, you will be notified before lessons start. If you are on a waiting list, you will not be charged unless your swimmer is placed in a class.

Summer Splash Week

This is a one-time 30-minute session with level assessment and water safety. The purpose of this session is to assess your swimmers level and provide some basic water safety knowledge. At the end of the session, you will know which swimming lesson level to register your swimmer for.
