In an unusual, but clever move, the Salem Family YMCA is doing a promotion to try to attract NBA superstar Damien Lillard to Salem to conduct a basketball camp for young kids aspiring to be basketball players. Kids are promoting the request using #LillardComeToSalem.
“Damian is so popular right now and provides such a great role model for our kids, we really feel strongly about getting Damian to come to Salem to conduct a camp for kids who look up to him,” said Dayna Jung, board member for the Salem Family YMCA.
Brandon Lemon, the grandson of former Harlem Globetrotter great, Meadowlark Lemon and youth activities director for the Y in Salem concurred. “Our kids would love to have Damian come to Salem to put on a day camp, I am guessing we would have hundreds sign up to be a part of the program,” said Lemon.
The unusual part to the appeal is the production of a two minute video full of kids asking Damian to come to Salem to do a camp. The video is being released this week to the media and will be pushed extensively on social media in an attempt to get to Damian and his people to see if a camp can be scheduled some time this summer at the Y in Salem.
“My son Elijah, practices three hours a day in his Lillard jersey. He dreams of being just like Damian one day. There are many kids in Salem just like Elijah. It will be amazing if Lillard can come to Salem,” said Jung.
