The spirit of the Olympic Movement will roll into Independence, as the Monmouth-Independence Family YMCA hosts a Family Fun Run in celebration of Olympic Day on June 10, 2017.
Our celebration will begin at 8:30 AM with registration and check-in for the run. The starting point is at Independence Dog Park, but we recommend parking at Riverview Park. We hope that folks will pre-register by either going online, or calling the Y. Day of registrations will also be available. We will be hosting a Short Course (1 mile) and a Long Course (5K) on the Willamette River Trail. The short course is stroller friendly, whereas the Long Course offers some terrain changes to add to the challenge of the run.
“We are excited to take part in Olympic Day and inspire kids and families in the Monmouth and Independence communities,” said Kathy Martin-Willis, the event coordinator. “The Monmouth-Independence Family YMCA is proud to support the Olympic Movement and encourage children and families to lead healthy, active lives.”
The Monmouth-Independence Family YMCA’s activity is one of more than 2,000 events taking place nationwide during the month of June. The events, designed to engage youth and families and to promote the ideals of the Olympic movement, feature athlete appearances, family-friendly activities, and interactive learning experiences. This year’s event will feature local Olympian John McArdle.
The cost for the event is $10.00 per individual or $20.00 per family during the early bird registration that is open until June 9, 2017. Day of registrations will be $15.00 per individual or $25.00 per family.
Around the world, more than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration. Olympic Day, created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games, focuses on the Olympic values and ideals such as fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship. In the U.S., Olympic Day events range from small gatherings to large, city-wide events.
